New figures show 73 council football pitches have had the chop since 2010.
The figures come from a Freedom of Information request made by GMB to all local authorities in Britain.
Alex Mayer said: “We’ve seen some football success this season across the region especially in Luton and Norwich. But this is another own goal by the Government who have slashed funding for councils meaning grassroots football is being left in a sorry state. Not only are they neglecting the breeding ground for the next generation of Hatters or Canaries stars, but they are decimating communities and removing healthy choices in the midst of an obesity epidemic.”
