Friday 29 March was meant to be the day Britain left the European Union – but it has turned out not to be Brexit Day after all.
To mark the occasion, and to call for Brexit to be stopped, Cambridge Stays organised a rally.
Guest speakers included Alex Mayer MEP, Daniel Zeichner MP, Cllr Lewis Herbert, Baroness Smith of Newnham, Susan van de Ven and Paul Browne.
Cambridgeshire MEP Alex Mayer said: “The last twenty-four hours saw Theresa May promise to quit as PM but that hasn’t changed her desperate deal one iota. Not a sentence, word or comma has changed since the last two times she put her deal to MPs and they overwhelmingly rejected it. The fact that a change in Tory leadership could have any effect just shows what we all know. This has always been more about internal Tory Party manoeuvring than the future of our country. What a mess!
“I am even more worried now about a Boris Johnson Brexit, a Michael Gove Brexit or Jacob Rees Mogg Brexit.
“The pressure that Cambridge Stays can exert over the next few hours and days is vital.
“Now more than ever we need to make sure the decision is put back to the people for a final say.”
