Following the news that Marks and Spencer stores in Luton, Bedford and Felixstowe will close, Labour MEP Alex Mayer said:
“This is devastating news for the staff and a blow to shoppers. M&S is one of the lynch pins of the town centre.
“Since 2015 more than 100,000 retail jobs have been lost in stores across Britain, as real wages have stagnated and the Government’s botched handling of the Brexit negotiations has hit consumer and business confidence.
“The Government need a plan. They should urgently reform business rates to ease the burden on traditional high streets and town centres.
“In these uncertain economic times, I would also urge the M&S management to abandon their long-held resistance to recognising Usdaw as the union to represent its staff.”
